Rajani Kaur Parthasarathy is a 16 year old Hufflepuff, born to Indian parents, and is a first generation English citizen. Hey Father is Kirthik and her mother is Yamini, who both come from Bombay, on the western coast of India. They moved to Manchester to have Rajani, hoping to provide her with a better life. When she got her Hogwarts letter, Rajani's parents didn't want to let her go because as Sikhs, they are not supposed to believe in magic. It came out then that her father has magic, as did his parents before him, and their parents before them. They came from an old line of purebloods but these past few generations have been squibs, who were cast off from the rest of the family, and many of them converted to Sikhism then to distance themselves from the other side of the family. In Rajani's case though, her gift was strong, and matched with her short temper they realized that without schooling she could be a danger to herself and others, so away to Hogwarts she went.

She lives her life as well as she can in accordance with the Sikh code of conduct, the Reht Maryada, which among other things means she doesn't drink or smoke, cannot pierce her ears, and must spend time in meditation/prayer. She wakes early every morning to do this, and also before bed, and she prays before classes, since Sikhs must pray before starting work. Living a normal life and working for a living in very valued in her religion.

She plays the piano, something she has done since she was 5. Since she has little time to play music at Hogwarts, she has taken up painting, which she is ok at.

If things aren't working out quite right she can get frustrated, really frustrated actually and she can have a hard time controlling her temper, but she doesn't quit. She just gets mad, and is known to throw things a lot, so watch out. She's also very no nonsense. She's outright about what she thinks and doesn't beat around the bush. If she doesn't like you she wont try and be nice to save face, she just won't spent time with you, and that's that. And if she has to be around someone she doesn't like, she wont try and be civil, she will most likely just be cold, or perhaps downright mean.

Although Rajani loves her faith, she struggles with it. There are things she is held back from doing, and she is often torn between the magical world and the world of her family.


Rajani is first and foremost a student. If she doesn't have her work done, you wont be able to pry her away for anything. Luckily she's a hard worker and a fast worker, so she tends to get her work out of the way in reasonable time.

Rajani performs very well in Herbology, and pretty well in astronomy and ancient runes. She is average in potions, history and DADA. All of those classes make sense to her, they are logical, and she can read books, and study hard, and work hard, and get it. The class that she really does well in is Herbology. She must have a green thumb. She's always really enjoyed the class and loves how well she does at it.

She performs below average in charms and transfiguration. She sometimes lacks the finesse to work the practical wand magic, and there is not a lot she can do about that, except practice, and that bugs her. And she is rubbish at divination, because apart from just not being good at it, she believes that none but God can or should know the future

She has a short temper and gets very frustrated when she doesn't understand something. This causes her problems with charms and transfiguration, neither of which she has ever been able to get a good grasp of. She's not great with her wand and even though it is perfectly functional sometimes it backfires on her.


To the people she does like, Rajani is an amazing friend. She is loyal, she knows the importance of that, of being able to trust people and have a support system. She knows what it is to give of herself for others, and she has a big heart and would do anything for the people she cares about. She's also kind of a voice of reason, trying to get people to do their homework and such, which many of her friends complain about, but she doesn't care.
